Aba Aba Knife Fish – Gym­nar­chus niloti­cus. A beau­ti­ful fish with a very ele­gant look to its every move­ment. The fin they use for swim­ming is on its back while most fish have the swim­ming fin on their bel­ly.

Size: In cap­tiv­i­ty, knife fish sizes over 48 inch­es (120cm) are most­ly unheard of. In the wild, this fish grows to be 5.5 feet / 167 cm!

Nat­ur­al Habi­tat: North­ern areas of Africa.

Ide­al Tank: Prefers dim­ly lit aquar­i­ums that have some plants. Large pieces of drift­wood and twist­ed roots, like man­grove, for cov­er.  Make sure that you anchor plants well.

Aquar­i­um Size: 40 gal­lon+ – 300 gal­lon

Tank Mates: Bala shark

Care Lev­el: Inter­me­di­ate+
